There’s Something About October

There’s something about October.

Maybe it’s the first cool morning when I step outside and realize the heat and humidity of summer have finally loosened their grip. Maybe it’s the changing leaves, the crispness in the air, or the horses starting to get those fuzzy winter coats.

Or maybe it’s simply that October feels like permission to slow down.

Autumn has always been my favorite time of year, but there’s something special about October. It’s when fall really starts to feel like fall. The mornings are cooler, the colors get prettier, and the evenings make you want to come home a little earlier and stay there.

And I am perfectly okay with that.

I love the pumpkins and mums. I love fall festivals, leaves crunching under my feet, and those beautiful Virginia backroads when the trees finally decide to show off. I love mornings at the barn when there’s just enough chill in the air to make a sweatshirt necessary.

Honestly, I just love sweatshirt weather.

But even more than that, I love being cozy.

Give me a soft sweatshirt, a warm blanket, something good to drink, Scooby curled up with me, and nowhere I absolutely have to be, and I’m pretty content.

Maybe that’s one of the reasons October feels different to me now.

For so much of the year, there seems to be this constant pull to do something. Spring brings projects. Summer brings long days, plans, places to go and things that need tending. There’s always something else that could be done.

October seems to whisper, You can slow down now.

And these days, I’m learning to listen.

I’ve spent a lot of my life staying busy. I can always find one more thing to take on, one more person who needs something, one more project to tackle or one more thing I should be doing.

But lately, I’m learning that I don’t have to fill every bit of space in my life just because it’s there.

Sometimes the whole point of making room is simply getting to enjoy the room.

October is good for that.

The days get shorter. The evenings get quieter. Life seems to naturally move a little closer to home. And instead of feeling like I need to fight against that, I find myself welcoming it.

Maybe slowing down looks like spending a little extra time at the barn without worrying about what I should be doing next. Maybe it’s taking Scooby outside and actually noticing how pretty the trees are. Maybe it’s a Saturday at home with no real agenda.

Or maybe it’s curling up under a blanket at the end of the day and realizing that I don’t have to be productive every minute of it.

I can just be.

There’s something comforting about watching nature do the same thing. By October, everything around us is beginning to settle. The leaves change and eventually fall. The garden begins winding down. Daylight disappears a little earlier each evening.

Nothing seems to be in a hurry.

Maybe that’s part of the beauty of October. It reminds me there’s a season for doing and growing and going, but there’s also a season for slowing down, coming home and appreciating what’s already here.

So bring on the fuzzy horses, falling leaves, pumpkins, sweatshirts, blankets, crisp mornings and cozy evenings.

Let the days get a little shorter.

Let life get a little quieter.

I’m perfectly happy to slow down and stay awhile.

Because there really is something about October.

And maybe what I love most about it is that October reminds me I don’t always have to rush into whatever comes next. Sometimes, I can just enjoy where I am.
